Ever wonder how processing works? When a customer uses an ATM machine, they pull anywhere from $20 to $1,000 out of a machine, and if it's not your own personal bank, the ATM will ask you "do you agree with a $3.00 surcharge?" This charge is typically around $3.00 which is an industry standard. This is the fee that banks charge the customer to process this bank-to-bank transaction.

Having an ATM allows you to now become the bank.  As an ATM owner or operator, you now are entitled to that $3.00 every time someone uses your ATM machine. Why would the big banks not have a monopoly on this service?  There simply aren't enough employees to service the entire United States.  There are roughly 400,000 ATMs in the U.S.
